Case Study – Industrial and Rugged Systems Custom Cable Assembly

The Challenge

Build a low-profile right angle micro USB cable.

A client who builds ruggedized computer and display systems came to Compatible Cable with a custom cable assembly requirement. They were building a small form factor system, and they needed a low-profile right angle micro USB cable manufactured for their new product line.

The Solution

After bringing in samples of right angle micro USB cables from our factory partners and alternative sources, we found that none of the existing cables were compact enough to fit into our client’s system. We designed and built a tooling with dimensions small enough to meet our client’s space limitations. We also realized during our investigation that our client had designed their system with the micro USB connector interface upside-down from the standard orientation. Given the small form factor and design, there was no way to correct the interface orientation on our client’s system, so we designed the custom tooling to build the cable with the standard outer-mold, but with the micro USB interface upside-down to match our client’s design. With the new tooling in place, we produced new samples which met our client’s requirement.

The Result

This cable became a regular production item for one of our client’s best-selling systems.
